Zebra Finch Diet
Zebra finches have a basic diet of seeds. It is best to buy a mix that has been commercially prepared. This is because it is good for your birds as it is mixed equally. However, it is not recommended to stock up on the mix because when they eat it the mix should be fresh.
At the most you should only be buying enough mix to last for a month. Furthermore, you will always want to make sure that they have food available. It is okay for them to control how much they need to eat. Furthermore, it is also a good idea to change their water daily.
Think about it, would you like to drink dirty water that has not been changed for weeks?
Grit, also known as sand, is another essential need of birds. Grit is what they use to grind up their food due to the fact that they do not have teeth. This is something that should also be bought commercially. Additionally, you should purchase a mixture that includes minerals such as oyster shells and charcoal. Not to mention the fact that if you like you can even add a vitamin additive to their food or water yet this is not something that is mandatory.
Balanced diets for Zebras can also consist of fresh foods that you have inside of your kitchen. However, you should be aware that you are going to have to test out different things with them because each bird is going to have varying likes and dislikes. Some good things to try include, frozen mixed vegetables that have been thawed, spouts, mashed hard boiled eggs, lettuce, bread crumbs, corn bread, and even spinach. Basically, if it is a natural food it should be okay for you bird. You will just want to steer clear of peppers, cabbage, and other things of that nature. Also, make sure you remove any of the food that they do not eat so they are not eating spoiled food.
When it comes to making sure they are getting calcium egg shells are a great choice. If you want to see your birds really chow down rinse your egg shells from your breakfast eggs and microwave them for about our minutes and watch them eat.
Lastly, you will want to make sure that your birds have cuttlebone. The pet store is the best place to find them. You will know it is the right item because it is white and approximately 2 x 5 inches. It can be hung on the side of the cage for them to peck at.
